Five English badminton players have been named in the Team GB squad heading to Krakow for the 2023 European Games.

The event is to function as the sport’s European Championships and vital Olympic qualification points will be up for grabs in Poland.

Johnnie Torjussen is aiming to reach his first Olympics and will take part in the men’s singles at his maiden major multi-sport games.

The 23-year-old picked up his first BWF Tour title earlier this year when winning the Portugal Open and will be keen to make an impression when the action begins on June 26.

Great Britain topped the badminton medal table at the most recent European Games in Minsk four years ago and Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith return to defend their mixed doubles crown.

Ben Lane and Sean Vendy will feature in the men’s doubles alongside Scottish pair Alex Dunn and Adam Hall, while Julie MacPherson and Ciara Torrance will team up in the women’s doubles.

Kirsty Gilmour, hoping to appear at her third Olympics next summer, will feature in the women’s singles.

The 10 badminton stars are part of a 178-strong Team GB squad for the 2023 European Games, which are set to take place in and around the Polish city between June 21 and July 3.

Team GB will compete across 18 Olympic disciplines, with Krakow serving as the 2023 European Championships for eight of these.
