BE Green

BE Green Recycling Project

Badminton England, in collaboration with UK Sport and Street Games, proudly present BE Green, an equipment recycling pilot project for badminton.

We’re encouraging the badminton community to give new life to old shuttles and rackets. We’ll be receiving donations of old rackets and shuttles that we will then recycle and provide to local schools, initially in Milton Keynes and Sheffield, to encourage more children to pick up a racket and help them to improve their health and wellbeing.

By donating you’re not only supporting sustainability but also empowering young children to embrace the sport we love.

This is an important project, that has the full support of England’s senior performance players who have been instrumental in defining the vision and objectives for the project, which we’re excited to share with you as the pilot progresses.

I am very pleased to be involved in the BE Green project, where we are looking at the wellbeing of school children and aiming to inspire them to play badminton. We do this in an environmentally sustainable way, and I hope I have helped to provide the children with the opportunity to enjoy the sport as much as I do.

Lisa Curtin – England Squad Player

How will the BE Green project be delivered?

The project will be piloted initially in Milton Keynes and Sheffield, with donation sites at the National Badminton Centre and the English Institute of Sport where players can hand in unwanted badminton equipment. A team from Badminton England will then assess the equipment to ensure its suitability, replacing grips and restringing frames if required.

Once in a suitable reusable condition, together with StreetGames, equipment will be donated back into the local community through schools for their PE sessions and also through the Milton Keynes Food bank, allowing underprivileged children to take badminton back home playing outdoors or at a local facility.

How can you help?

If you have access to the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes or the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, you can hand in any badminton equipment.

What items will we accept?

I’m very happy and proud that this BE GREEN project has launched, as a badminton player I always want to encourage more people to join and enjoy the sport as much as I do. The new BE GREEN project does this in a way that is not only inviting for more young people but is also environmentally friendly and makes sure nothing goes to waste!

If you do not have access to the pilot sites above, there are still many ways in which you can support the project and beyond.

Be a BE Green pioneer in your area. Collect equipment from your community and contact jeanniemo@badmintonengland.co.uk to see if we can collect these items.

Consider your club’s sustainability model. Are you recycling in your venue or facility, can you be the difference and help encourage your venue to provide recycling waste bins.

Be an advocate for BE Green at home and in the community, encouraging the use of sustainable products.

Our Partners

Thank you to our partners who are supporting us in this project including the National Youth Voice Forum, Street Games and UK Sport.

“BE Green is an incredible project to provide other children with the opportunities to play badminton and have access to the equipment in order to do this with quality.

“This is really important because there are so many children who are less fortunate and don’t have the opportunity to enjoy badminton.”

Sian Phillips, National Youth Voice Forum
