England will be led by a bumper contingent of five Tokyo Olympians as they prepare to scrap over the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup.

The unique mixed team tournament will see the sport’s top 16 nations collide in Vantaa, Finland from 26 September to 3 October.

And the nation’s biggest stars have aligned with a 13-strong squad boasting an exciting blend of experience and youth.

Marcus Ellis, Lauren Smith, Chloe Birch, Ben Lane and Sean Vendy return to the court for the first time since the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Ellis and Smith reached the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles at their second Games and their three team-mates all represented Team GB with pride in Japan.

They will be joined by an exciting clutch of emerging talent including 17-year-old Estelle van Leeuwen, Callum Hemming, Steve Stallwood, Abigail Holden, Jess Hopton, Jess Pugh and Johnnie Torjussen.

The 16 teams have been drawn into four groups, with England in a challenging Group D alongside Kento Momota’s Japan, Lee Zii Jia’s Malaysia and Egypt.

Nations play out pool stage ties across each of the five traditional disciplines and the top two in each group then progress to the quarter-finals.

England’s best-ever result at the Sudirman Cup came in 2007 when they reached the semi-finals in Glasgow.

All but two Tokyo gold medallists are slated to compete as well as six defending YONEX All England champions including Lee and Nozomi Okuhara.

The tournament has been staged 17 times since it was first won by Indonesia in Jakarta in 1989, most recently by China.
