Lane Vendy 1200

Ben Lane and Sean Vendy were the pick of English performances as they reached the men’s doubles semi-finals of the YONEX German Open.

Lane and Vendy battled through both the round of 16 and quarter-final before defeat to Won Ho Kim and Seung Jae Seo in the last four.

The number one seeds were made to fight from early in their campaign, losing the first game in their opening match against Ching Heng Su and Guan Xun Wu before coming back to win 19-21 21-13 21-7.

The pair were in their groove by the quarter-finals and eased past Cheng Kuan Chen and Bing-Wei Lin 21-11 21-14.

But their run would eventually end just before the final, as they lost 21-14 21-19 to Korean seventh seeds Kim and Seo.

The women’s doubles saw plenty of English representation with Abbygael Harris and Lizzie Tolman and Sian Kelly and Annie Lado both in action.

Harris and Tolman took on Turkish eighth seeds Bengisu Ercetin and Nazlican Inci in their opening match and fought hard but were ultimately beaten 21-17 21-18.

Kelly and Lado lost 21-14 21-12 to Debora Jille and Sara Thygesen in the round of 16.

The mixed doubles draw also saw two English pairs with Gregory and Jenny Mairs and Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen both entered.

The Mairs pushed Danish duo Rasmus Espersen and Amalie Cecilie Kudsk all the way in their round of 16 contest, taking the first game before eventually losing 22-24 21-15 21-17 in a match that last 70 minutes.

Hemming and Van Leeuwen faced American pair Presley Smith and Jennie Gai at the same stage and also took the first game before losing 18-21 21-19 22-20 in another match that ran over an hour
