1928 All England trophy

1928aetrophyThe National Badminton Museum was delighted to recently receive a miniature cup awarded to the winner of the 1928 All England Men’s Doubles.

The trophy was donated to the museum by Barbara Harris, god daughter of Sir George Thomas who in 1928 had won the Men’s doubles with Frank Hodge. The silver cup measures 11.5 cms from base to top of handles.

By a coincidence the museum had already purchased the miniature cup awarded to Frank Hodge at the same time, and our picture shows the pair of cups now re-united after 84 years – in fact the second cup arrived in the museum during the 2012 Yonex All England Championships - in 1928 the tournament ran from Monday March 5th to Saturday March 10th, while in 2012 the dates were Tuesday March 6th to Sunday March 11th. Sunday play was not introduced until 1999 for these Championships.

The Silver Challenge trophy to be held by the winners in 1928 for one year had been presented by Col. And Mrs. A. Hill - the winners would each receive a prize value £2 2s.and the miniature trophy noted above.
