Early county match 1899

In the Field magazine of January 28th 1899 is a report of a match played between Surrey and Hampshire:

1899 racquetThis match took place at Guildford on Jan. 24, and proved to be most interesting. Some brilliant individual play was witnessed, but thanks to Surrey’s longer practice together, and partly also to the fact that they were playing in one of their own courts, the result was never in doubt. It is worthy of note that the two pairs from the Guildford club won all their matches, and it is open to question whether, in future, it would not be better for inter-county matches to be played on some neutral ground. At the same time there is no doubt that the stronger side won. Play commenced soon after 11 a.m., and, with a break of an hour or so for lunch, the match was over by 4 p.m., and resulted in a win for Surrey by 12 sets to 4; 25 games to 9, or 459 points to 314. Buckley and Lincoln had the best record for the winners, though they were run close by Mellersh and Collier, whilst for the losers Buckell and Hillier displayed good form, and the soundest combination of any pair in the match, and their doubles win on a strange court reflected great credit upon their judgement. Mr P. Buckley, the energetic secretary of the Guildford Club, and president of the Badminton Association, looked after the arrangements of the match, and materially helped to make it a complete success.
