2012 Olympics, 50p coin

olympic 2012, 50p coinTo commemorate the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in London, The Royal Mint in January 2009, launched its biggest ever competition and invited the British public to design a series of 50p coins, 29 different sports to be featured.

The Royal Mint website tells us Emma Kelly, an illustrator from London, designed the badminton coin. When she entered the competition, Emma had been working on drawing structures, which is reflected in her design. She wanted to create a symbolic and easily recognisable design for badminton and enjoys identifying details when she draws.

The coin went into circulation in 2010, and the National Badminton Museum has purchased one of the presentation packs produced by the Royal Mint which is illustrated here.
