Victory in Vienna for Ellis and Langridge at Austrian Open

Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge landed their first title of the year as the English pair won the Austrian Open men’s doubles title on Saturday night.

The national champions and world number 25 partnership overcame Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi and Yuta Watanabe 21-14, 21-16 in Vienna.

Their title aspirations came to the fore in the second as they carved a series of openings from 8-8, before taking the match in 40 minutes.

Ellis and Langridge, who remain in a good position as far as Olympic qualification is concerned, last won on the international circuit at last November’s Scottish Open Grand Prix.

Their previous victory on European soil came at the Italian International in December 2014.

This win, coupled with their unbeaten form at the recent European Team Championships, was the perfect tonic ahead of their Yonex German Open campaign next week, the lead-up tournament to the YONEX All England Championships.

In the mixed doubles, seventh-seeded Matthew Nottingham and Emily Westwood’s superb week came to an end in a tightly contested final.

The English duo lost out fifth seeds Mathias Christiansen and Lena Grebak 21-17, 21-17.

Earlier in the tournament, Nottingham and Harley Towler reached the last eight of the men’s doubles.

Heather Olver and Lauren Smith, the third seeds, were beaten in the second round of the women’s doubles.
