Duke of York visits Yonex All England Open Championships

His Royal Highness, was greeted by Chief Executive Adrian Christy, who introduced BADMINTON England’s President, its Vice Presidents and members of the Board of Directors.

The Duke of York has been Patron of BADMINTON England since 1984. His Royal Highness is keen to see Badminton promoted in the UK and is working to support BADMINTON England in the build up to the 2012 Olympics.

His Royal Highness was also introduced to Mr Ben Yoneyama, President of Yonex Company Ltd who have been sponsors of the Championships since 1984.

Before taking his seat to enjoy some match action from the round of the last 16, including English pairing Chris Adcock and Andrew Ellis in the men’s doubles, His Royal Highness met a number of the event volunteers and court officials who play a key role in the Championships’ success.

The Duke of York concluded his visit by addressing a reception of leading badminton business associates.

Adrian Christy said: “It was a great honour to receive His Royal Highness at the Yonex All England Open Championships. He is a great supporter of badminton and as always, showed a keen interest in BADMINTON England’s future plans.

“He was also very knowledgeable about the GB players involved in the race for Olympic qualification at London 2012.

“We look forward to welcoming him back to the Championships in the coming years.”
