Carlton to sponsor Orbital Circuit

BADMINTON England are today celebrating the launch of a second season of the Orbital Circuit - but the first sponsored by Carlton.

The Carlton Orbital Circuit will offer an additional competition to sit alongside the Elite, Satellite and Challenger events in the BADMINTON England calendar.

Venues in York, Hull, Middlesex, Cumbria, Essex, Mid Glamorgan, Worcestershire and, provisionally Warwickshire, are already signed up to the new series of 'Saturday only' tournaments.

The Carlton Orbitals will particularly appeal to aspiring men's singles players who have found it difficult to gain entry to the popular Elite, Satellite and Challenger events.

The top four players or pairs in the final points standings will be invited to the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes to play Carlton Orbital Circuit finals on May 24.

Carlton, the World's No.1 specialist badminton company, are already one of the partners in the successful staging of the English National Championships at Manchester Velodrome every February. Carlton also broadened their event portfolio last season by sponsoring the new Carlton Leisure Centre Championships.

Darren Parks, BADMINTON England's Head of Competitions and Events, said: "We hope this Carlton Orbital Circuit will prove popular to county players in particular, especially as the tournaments will carry National Ranking Points.

"But we want the events to be both competitive and fun. For this reason they will only be played on a Saturday to avoid conflict with the Inter-County Chamionships."

Carlton Badminton Promotions Manager Matt Shuker said: "We are delighted to sponsor this new Carlton Orbital Circuit and look forward to seeing some emerging talent taking part and using it as a stepping stone in their badminton play."

The Carlton Orbital tournaments will be run in pools in the early rounds to ensure players face more than one match with knockout in the final stages. Players will be limited to entering just two events to make scheduling easier (ie singles and doubles or mixed OR two doubles events).

All players must be over 16. For tournament details and an application form check out the BADMINTON England web site at
