Lanarkshire and Gloucestershire have sealed promotion to the second tier of the Senior County Championships after progressing through this weekend’s Division 1 play-off round robin competition.

Held at the National Badminton Centre, Lanarkshire and Gloucestershire were joined by Hertfordshire 2 and Suffolk as all four teams looked to seal their place in the Championship.

Having finished first and second respectively in Division One North to seal a spot in the play-offs, Lanarkshire and Gloucestershire had both sealed promotion by the close of play on Saturday.

Lanarkshire opened up with a convincing 9-2 win over Hertfordshire 2 on Saturday morning as they started their campaign in fine style.

Gloucestershire faced a sterner test, battling past Division One South winners Suffolk 6-5 in what proved to be a crucial victory for their promotion chances.

Gloucestershire then eased past Hertfordshire 2 9-2 in their second match on Saturday, while Lanarkshire comfortably saw off Suffolk 8-3.

All that was left on Sunday was to decide first and second spot, and it was Lanarkshire who ended the campaign on a high with a 7-4 victory.

Suffolk defeated Hertfordshire 2 7-4 to finish third in the group, though both counties will have to try and seal promotion to the Championship again next season.
