SmashUp! a hit at Cockburn School

Cockburn School enjoying weekly SmashUp! sessions!

With the support of West Yorkshire Sport and Badminton England’s Satellite Club funding, Cockburn School is enjoying weekly SmashUp! sessions!

Cockburn School is located in Leeds and draws most of its pupils from deprived areas, where unemployment is higher than average for the city, and 48% of students are eligible for pupil premium (government funding for disadvantaged children).

The SmashUp! programme is delivered by two girls from year 10, Kuduratu Raufu and Holly Staten.  Before sessions commenced the girls completed the SmashUp! online training and became qualified SmashUp! Activators.  Each Friday sessions see over 20 young people playing badminton.  Each week the Activators are developing their leadership, organisation and communication skills which have enhanced their CVs.

Kududartu who is an EAL student said that “SmashUp! has been really good as it has helped me to improve my communication skills and I have socialised with people that I never mixed with before”.

Both of the young leaders come from a disadvantaged area of Leeds and delivering SmashUp! to their peers has increased their confidence.  “SmashUp! has been a great experience for me because it has taught me the skills and qualities to be a good leader.  This will help me in the future as I want to be involved in sport.” (Holly Staten)

If you would like to offer this opportunity to your young leaders, we are offering schools two free links to the SmashUp! online Activator training – email for further information.
