Yonex named title sponsor for the 2011 BWF World Championships at Wembley

BADMINTON England today confirmed long-time commercial partners Yonex Company Ltd as the title sponsor for the 2011 BWF World Championships.

It will be the third time England has hosted the World Championships but the first time the Championships have been staged in London.

Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena staged the 1993 and 2003 World Championships and the NIA is also the home of the Yonex All England Championships, the world’s oldest Open badminton tournament.

The All England was always regarded as the unofficial world championships until the inaugural World Championships was introduced in 1977 and in 2011 it will be one of five new Premier events in the 2011 BWF Super Series.

The announcement of Yonex as the title sponsor for the 2011 BWF World Championships comes on the opening day of this year’s 18th BWF World Championships in Paris, where the world’s No 1 badminton brand is also the title sponsor.

The World Championships will come to London for the first time from August 8-14, 2011 and it marks the return of world-class badminton to the capital for the first time since 1993 when the Yonex All England Championships was staged at Wembley Arena for the last time before moving to its present home in Birmingham.

Along with Yonex as title sponsors, BADMINTON England are also pleased to confirm the Badminton World Federation, UK Sport, Visit London and Brent Council as official World Championships partners.

BADMINTON England’s Chief Executive Adrian Christy said today: “Yonex have sponsored the All England Championships for the last 27 years and we are delighted that they now feel able to sponsor the BWF World Championships at Wembley Arena as well.

“The 2011 World Championships will take on special significance because Wembley Arena will also be the venue for the badminton tournament at the Olympic Games so it will give badminton fans a taste of what’s to come at London 2012.

“We aim to put on a world-class event in a world-class city at the World Championships. I know the organising team at BADMINTON England will be working flat out to make this a Yonex BWF World Championships to remember.

“To this end we are also indebted to our official partners for their support in our quest to achieve this.”

Ben Yoneyama, President of Yonex Company Ltd, said: “I will be in Paris this week to see France stage the World Championships for the first time and I am also looking forward to our company’s involvement in next year’s Championships when London stage the Championships for the first time.

“As the world’s No 1 badminton brand, we are delighted to be the title sponsors for both Paris and London in this exciting countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games.”
