On Saturday 11th September 2010, 113 people ranging from nine to 70 years gathered at Langley Secondary School, Solihull in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most people participating in a badminton rally.’
The existing record held was 96 people, which was achieved on 23rd May 2009 in Singapore. Solihull & Shirley Performance Centre organised the event with help from its juniors and senior club as well as from pupils from Langley Secondary School and players from other clubs from the Solihull Badminton League such.
Wendy Bill, from Maurice Robinson Sports, kick started the event at 1pm. It was a nail biting event with several attempts being made, some almost reaching our target before finally succeeding at 1.40pm when Andrew Kitching, number 113 hit the final shot – the atmosphere intensifying as we reached our goal.
Qiao Sun hit the 97th shot to take the record. Gina-marie Goulding, forward for Birmingham City Ladies’ Football Club, was also there to hit the 66th shot. Ruby Turner (Soul/Jazz singer) and Doctor Karandikar from the local community were on hand to witness the event. To mark the momentous occasion we were honoured by the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull.
There had been two failed attempts this year by Aston University and Aylesbury but everything just appeared to go right for Solihull and Shirley.
