England’s National Badminton Championships will head back to Wycombe Leisure Centre by popular demand this coming August – one year on from hosting a hugely successful 2017 edition of the 55-year old tournament in the town.
The move to Wycombe Leisure Centre - a flagship venue in Places for People’s portfolio of sports centres - was warmly welcomed by players, volunteers and fans alike last year, leading to sell-out crowds and a 160-strong main draw played out over three days of competition.
For 2018, Wycombe will play host to the nation’s best all over again between 24-26 August, offering the badminton community, local sports fans and families a chance to enjoy a Bank Holiday weekend watching top class sport featuring England’s top ranked players.
The line-up is likely to include a number of players set to compete for England at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
Since 1964, the English National Badminton Championships have been the pinnacle of English badminton and the showpiece event in the domestic tournament calendar with players striving to improve their rankings across the circuits to qualify.
Last year’s ‘Nationals’ saw the 100th national champion in the history of English Badminton crowned – the honour going to Tom Wolfenden who, playing alongside Peter Briggs, claimed a first ever senior national title.
Wolfenden was one of six winners to pick up their first senior national titles in Wycombe whilst Lauren Smith claimed a fifth straight Women’s Doubles title.
Tickets are set to go on sale 26 April 2018.
