Marcus Ellis and Paul Van Rietvelde lived up to their top seeding today by lifting the men's doubles title at the Forza Denmark International in Frederikshaven.
The Anglo-Scottish pair took the title with a battling 25-23 16-21 21-19 victory over unseeded Danish pair Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Kim Astrup Sorensen in a final lasting 59 minutes. They had to beat one Swedish and three Danish pairs to take the title.
Ellis and Van Rietvelde came from behind in the first game, recovering from
19-14 down to level at 19-19. But the Danes still carved out four game points before Ellis and Van Rietvelde took the opener at their first opportunity.
But the Danes responded by taking control of the second game. Ellis and Van Rietvelde closed to within two points at 12-10 but they were unable to produce the run of points they had managed in the first game.
In the decider things looked ominous when the Danes opened up a 14-11 lead. But, just as in the first game, Ellis and Van Rietvelde produced a decisive run of points to move 17-14 ahead and although the Danes saved a match point at 20-18 they couldn't stop the top seeds taking the title at their second opportunity.
It is Ellis and Van Rietvelde's second title together this season after their victory at the Yonex Welsh International in December to go with their runners-up spot at the Yonex Belgian International.
The pair can now hope to move closer to a world top 30 place from their current No. 35 spot and a step closer to direct entry to World Superseries events.
