Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith stunned the second seeds en-route to the quarter-finals of the Yonex German Open but could get no further after defeat to Choi Sol-gyu and Korchae Yoo-jung.
The eighth seeds from Korea booked their places in the semi-finals with a 21-13 21-15 victory over the English pair in Mülheim, Germany.
Sol-gyu and Yoo-jung will face third seeds from Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lai in the semi-final on Saturday.
Earlier this week, Ellis and Smith put in a fine performance to see off Marvin Emil Seidel and Linda Efler of Germany 21-17 21-5 in the first round.
The English mixed doubles pair followed that up by knocking out the second seeds in Germany with a sensational 25-23 21-19 win over Seo Seung-jae and Kim Ha-na.
It would prove to be the highlight for Ellis and Smith in the Yonex German Open as they were beaten in straight games on Friday night.
In the men’s doubles, Ellis went out in the first round of the men’s doubles with Chris Langridge after a 21-16 21-14 defeat to Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
Smith and her women’s doubles partner Sarah Walker were also defeated in the first round falling 21-15 21-11 to China’s Du Yue and Li Yinhui.
