Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith brilliantly claimed their first Super 300 title as they won the Thailand Masters mixed doubles crown.
The 13th-ranked pair had to come through another battle after a week of tight contests, as they beat Indonesian duo Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja 21-16 13-21 21-16 in a match which lasted one hour and four minutes.
The title, their first on the BWF World Tour since the 2018 Scottish Open, is also the first for any English players at the tournament in Bangkok.
Sixth seeds Ellis and Smith have had to scrap their way through several rollercoaster battles in the competition, coming from a game down to win both their quarter-final and semi-final matchups.
But the final, against the fourth seeds, saw a slight role reversal with the English duo winning the first game but losing the initiative midway through the match only to wrestle it back again.
From the off, Ellis and Smith were confident as they racked up a first game in which they were always ahead and managed to keep Faizal and Widjaja at bay.
Game two saw their opponents fight back however, as the Indonesian competitors led throughout most of it – pulling away after being locked with Ellis and Smith at 8-8.
The finale was back to the standard of the first game from the English stars however as they led for the entirety of it.
In taking six consecutive points and claiming a 6-0 lead Ellis and Smith found their rhythm at the perfect time to establish a dominance that they would never relinquish – sealing the champagne moment.
