Chapman up for Nationals challenge

Warwickshire’s Fontaine Chapman has her heart set on defending her national title when the tournament arrives in High Wycombe next month.

After winning her first national title last year after two previous finals' defeats, Chapman can’t wait to take to the courts between 1-3 September.

Having beaten second-seed Chloe Birch in 2016, Chapman said: “I am really looking forward to defending my Nationals title; of course it is always a little nerve wracking being the one everyone wants to beat but I am certainly up for the challenge again this year.

“I think the anticipation of it (the Nationals) being somewhere new always creates an extra buzz around the players but I am most looking forward to getting out on court and fighting to defend my title!

“The Nationals mean a lot to me. I think everyone saw how much it meant to me winning it last year, especially after having worked so hard to come back from a lot of injuries and setbacks and although it may not be as big as a European medal (which I just missed out on this year!) or a Superseries title, it is still one that I believe every player in the country wants to have!

“My training since European's has been a tough one as I have been recovering from a knee injury, however, after being away competing for two weeks, I am now in preparations for the World Championships and I am confident that I'll be in fighting fit for the Nationals just one week later.”

Wycombe Leisure Centre will be the 20th venue to have hosted the Nationals in its 53-year history, extending Badminton England’s commitment to take the Nationals around the country, following the 2016 championships which were held in Derby.

Join us in Wycombe Leisure Centre (1-3 September) as we court all the national pride and joy of English badminton.
