Barcelona Spain Masters preview: Ellis and Smith look to double up

Just three weeks after securing their first Super 300 title together, Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith are aiming to double up at the Barcelona Spain Masters.

The pair won the Thailand Masters mixed doubles crown in January, their first title on the BWF World Tour since the 2018 Scottish Open.

And the fourth seeds open up their campaign in Spain in an all-English tie against Gregory Mairs and Victoria Williams.

Chris and Gabby Adcock are stepping up their preparations for the YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships next month as they also feature in the mixed doubles draw – facing Germany’s Jones Ralfy Jansen and Kilasu Ostermeyer in round one.

Callum Hemming and Jessica Pugh face an opening round battle against German duo Bjarne Geiss and Emma Moszczynski on their quest for mixed doubles glory, while Tom Wolfenden and Jenny Moore line up against Russia's Evgenij Dremin and Evgenia Dimova.

Elsewhere, in the men’s singles, Toby Penty faces Russian Sergey Sirant while Chloe Birch will be looking to add to her recently won English National Badminton Championships title with success on the continent.

She kicks off her single’s campaign against Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

The duos of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy, and Mairs and Wolfenden are both in action in the men’s doubles.

Meanwhile, sixth seeds Birch and Smith team up in the women’s doubles, as do Moore and Williams, who face a tough test in round one as they square off against second seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai.
