Olympic silver medalist and Badminton England Ambassador Gail Emms was the special guest in the National Junior League earlier this month.
The former world number 1 visited Hatfield’s Birchwood Leisure Centre to inspire and pass on her knowledge to youngsters competing for a place in the National Junior League Finals in June.
The league provides recreational players a first step to moving into higher level competitions such as county and circuit tournaments, and is open to players aged between 10 and 16 years.
In this pilot year Badminton England is running 18 leagues across the country reaching over 1,500 young people and the concept has been given the thumbs up by Emms.
She said: “The Junior League is the same kind of environment in which I started off my badminton career. It’s great to see so many young players with a racket in hand really enjoying their badminton.”
John Stobo, an organiser of the Hertfordshire Junior League, said: “We really appreciate Badminton England’s support with the Junior League.
“It has allowed people from across the county involved in junior badminton to have an organised and structured league where everyone can get together easily and has helped to get as many young players as possible from across Hertfordshire playing competitive badminton.
