England off to a winner in Indonesia

Chris and Gabby Adcock into quarter finals, Japan Open, 2014, banner

England's mixed doubles pairs showed the rest of the squad the way on day one of the BCA Indonesia Open in Jakarta today.

Fifth seeds Chris and Gabby Adcock were the first England hopes into action when 12 of the 16 mixed doubles first round matches were also featured on the qualifying day's programme at this Premier event on the MetLife BWF Superseries circuit.

The Adcocks won a tight opening contest 21-17 18-21 21-18 against Japan's Kenichi Hayakawa and Misaki Matsutomo despite their opponents, who were Yonex Japan Open semi-finalists last week, recovering from 15-7 down in the decider to within a point at 16-15.

The England pair will now face Maneepong Jongjit and Sapsiree Taerattanachai on Thursday boosted by a win in their only previous meeting with the Thai pair in three games at last year's Bitburger Open.

The Adcocks were followed into the second round by Chris Langridge and Heather Olver, who defeated Muhammad Rijal and Vita Marissa of Indonesia 21-17 21-18 and that earned them a first meeting with Dutch pair Jacco Arends and Selena Piek.

The wins mean England's four doubles players have only one event tomorrow when the first round proper gets under way.

Adcock and Langridge are in men's doubles action with their respective partners Andy Ellis and Peter Mills while Gabby Adcock and Lauren Smith and Heather Olver and Kate Robertshaw tackle the women's doubles.

Rajiv Ouseph is in singles action against Indonesian qualifier Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo.
