Chris and Gabby Adcock are through to the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles at the Yonex Japan Open in Tokyo.
The England pair followed up yesterday’s opening three-game victory over Kenta Kazuno and Yui Miyauchi of Japan with a 21-18 21-13 win today over Denmark’s Mads Pieler Kolding and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.
That earned the second seeds a quarter-final clash tomorrow with Hong Kong’s fifth seeds Lee Chun Hei and Chau Hoi Wah.
But Adcock’s hopes of a second quarter-final appearance in the men’s doubles were dashed when he and Andy Ellis lost to unseeded Taiwan pair Chen Hung Ling and Lu Chia Pin in one of the final matches of the evening session.
Eighth seeds Adcock and Ellis took the opening game 21-17 before the Taiwan pair hit back to take the next two 21-14 21-13.
That left Adcock and wife Gabby to focus on their mixed doubles challenge as they kept on course for another clash with China’s Olympic gold medallists and 2011 world champions Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei if both pairs reach Sunday’s final.
They have met seven times and the Adcocks’ only win came on the way to their Hong Kong Open title triumph in November.
But first England’s big Commonwealth Games medal hopes have to take on Lee and Chau in a first meeting between the pairs. A win will bring the Adcocks a semi-final against Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels of Germany or Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na. They stand 1-1 with the Germans and have lost their only meeting with the Koreans.
