Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith’s impressive YONEX Swiss Open campaign has ended with a silver medal after missing out on top spot in an entertaining final.
The seventh seeds had already battled against the odds to reach the Sunday finale, including a semi-final victory over compatriots Ben Lane and Jess Pugh.
But the last hurdle was just a step too far against top seeds Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich, unfortunate to go down to a 22-20 21-19 victory in a match lasting 47 minutes.
This is a week Ellis and Smith will be able to look back on fondly however, continuing the good form that saw them become Dutch Open champions together late in 2017.

Their character came to the fore as early as the first game too, 14-8 down at one stage before resolutely battling their way back to 17-17 – a run which included four consecutive points.
From there it was anyone’s guess as to who would take the opener but it was the German pair who narrowly reached the post first, breaking from 20-20 to win two straight points and going 1-0 up.
Intriguingly the second game followed in similar fashion to the one before, Ellis and Smith ably hauling back a four-point deficit to go into the latter stages level pegging.
But having sat 11-11, Lamsfuss and Herttrich seized the initiative and, despite their English opponents getting back within a point, the top seeds just about held to win from their fourth match point, a straight games defeat far from doing Ellis and Smith justice in Basel.
