In an era where work-life balance and employee wellbeing are at its most important, there are few better ways than the nation’s favourite racket sport to deliver on those crucial assets.
And thanks to Corporate Badminton, that only looks set to get stronger too, making its mark across England with further expansion in the pipeline.
Pitting companies from across the country against each other on court for highly-competitive and action-packed matches – with a sense of fun very much at the heart of the contest.
The league is currently in its second year, almost doubling in size since its debut season – growing across the country in the process.
Starting from humble beginnings in London, the league has expanded into Manchester and Leeds, the perfect development for potential future growth.
Last year also saw companies battle for the honour of playing at the Arena Birmingham, home of the YONEX All England Open, while this season will see finalists get a chance to watch Friday’s evening session of the world’s oldest badminton tournament.
But for players old and new, corporate badminton is about more than just the off-court benefits.
“I hadn’t played competitive badminton for 14 years and the corporate badminton competition has re-ignited my love for the game,” said Greig, of Hoares Bank.
Lucy, also of Hoares Bank, added: “It was my first time playing competitively, which has made me want to play regularly to improve my game.”
This campaign saw teams across the country split into ten divisions based on location, with the top two from each division progressing into a knockout draw.
Among them were ShineTech Europe, defending champions having triumphed at the Arena Birmingham last term, winning both of their pool games so far.
But they’ve certainly been given a run for their money, forced into a singles shoot-out by Argus Software, showing the increased strength on display in the tournament.
And with the likes of Barclays, Accenture, Deloitte and the NHS all competing, it’s fair to say the best in the business are showing their capabilities both on and off the court.
But the global brand for a global sport is far from just limited to England, with HSBC’s sponsorship of the BWF World Tour allowing badminton to be at its global best.
“It’s great to see the competition growing so fast, last year we only had 12 teams from London, this year we have 28 teams across London, Lancashire and Yorkshire,” said competition organiser Gareth Clarke.
“So many current club players have encouraged colleagues from their workplace to compete with them.
“It’s fantastic to hear that some of these players have not played for 20 years and are now dusting off their badminton racquet and getting involved with the sport again.”
