The National Schools Badminton Championships will return again this year following its post-Covid revival 12 months ago and the best young badminton players from around the country will battle it out for national honours.
Here is all you need to know about this year’s event:
When will it take place?
The event will take on Saturday 29th March and Sunday 30th March.
Where will it take place?
The event will take place at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.
What categories are there?
There are four categories: KS3 (school years seven to nine) Girls, KS3 Boys, KS4 (school years 10 to 11) Girls and KS4 Boys.
What schools will be there?
There will be one school for each of the four categories from each of the eight regions schools are split into.
What are the eight regions?
The eight regions, which also have their own colour, are: Yorkshire & North East (light blue), North West (red), East Midlands (orange), West Midlands (purple), East (yellow), London & South East (green), South Central (white) and South West (dark blue).
How did the schools get there?
The schools competing at the event will have won a series of events at local, county and regional level to get there.
Who won last year?
In both the KS3 and KS4 Girls categories, Kendrick School from the South Central region took the crown.
Wilson’s School from London and South East won the KS3 Boys tournament and Reading School from South Central win the KS4 Boys event.
How many schools took part in this year’s event?
Last year 280 schools took part and this year that number is over double!
Each region has its own colour (see above) and their own theme song that different schools will come out to.
Louise Hewitt, Badminton England’s young people manager, said: “Putting on the event is great.
“The average age of a junior (playing badminton) is 14, which we want to be much lower, so a big push of our strategy is to get young people involved, and to do that, we must start at schools.
“This year’s event is fully inclusive as every school in the country had the opportunity to take part.
“If we can demonstrate growth from last year, which we have done, if we can demonstrate success, if we can show off positive stories, then the event is only going to go from strength to strength and hopefully it will mean will pick up a corporate sponsor.”
