Badminton England today announce that Marcus Ellis has withdrawn from the BWF World Championships due to a hip injury and planned surgery.

The World Championships will take place from 22 to 28 August 2022 in Tokyo, Japan.

Ellis has confirmed that in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games, he was experiencing some discomfort which subsequently became worse, and he has taken the decision, in consultation with his medical team, to undergo an operation as soon as possible to prevent any further damage.

Ellis said: “I am really disappointed to have to withdraw from the World Championships but it is definitely the right thing to do at this time.

Ellis and mixed doubles partner Lauren Smith won Silver at the Commonwealth Games on Monday.

Head of Performance Operations Mark Beecher said: “It has been a difficult decision for Marcus to make and we are fully supportive of this.”

“We have put together a full recovery plan and everything needed for him to be able to come back and commence Olympic qualification in 2023.

“We all wish Marcus a full and speedy recovery”.
