Working with Parents in Sport 1200x410 1

October 4, 2022

Badminton England are excited to announce a new collaboration with Working with Parents in Sport (WWPIS) for 2022-23.

This will see elements of the WWPIS programme being used within the England Junior Performance Pathway.

Over the last six months, WWPIS have been working closely with the Badminton England Pathway Team delivering a number of workshops including ‘Creating a Positive Parent Culture’ and ‘Effectively managing the deselection process.’

August saw WWPIS visit the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes to deliver a workshop to Performance Pathway Parents alongside one of the Junior Camps, the first in a series of workshops planned over the course of the next 12 months.

Programme manager Nikki Tarrant said: “As a team we have been working with Gordon [MacLelland, CEO] at WWPIS over the last few months and are really excited about the programme of workshops that are planned over the course of the next year or so.

“We hope it will provoke interesting discussions amongst parents/guardians who are integral to the sporting journey of an individual and who we know have a tough job managing the ups and downs and commitment required with having a talented player in the household.

“Gordon will be delivering a programme of interactive and engaging Sports Performance Parenting workshops which we hope parents will find interesting as we look to develop the programme of support we offer across the Junior Performance Pathway.”

The announcement comes at the beginning of Keeping your Child Safe in Sport Week (October 3-9), NSPCC’s annual awareness campaign helping parents to keep their children safe in sport, supported by the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU).

CEO Gordon MacLelland added: “We are extremely excited about working in partnership with Badminton England.

“Everyone has a role to play in creating positive environments for young people to thrive in and Badminton England have recognised this by supporting all the key stakeholders in the process.

“Staff and parents have been so receptive to the work that we have done to date, and I was blown away by the Performance Pathway Team who, in the summer, trialled delivering both selection and de-selection news to Engage and Progress funded Junior Programme players in person by travelling around the country to deliver the news personally.

“This was an incredible gesture that seemed to have been well received by parents, despite a small number being on the receiving end of disappointing news.

“We are looking forward to the partnership developing and flourishing.”

Parent Lisa Chau said: “Thank you for organising the Working with Parents in Sport workshop.

“I found it really interesting and useful and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am really looking forward to the future sessions Gordon promised us.”
