4 Nations 1200

19 July 2023

Sheffield sports fans will be able to enjoy world-class badminton next month as part of the 4 Nations Para Badminton International at the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

The event, hosted by Badminton England with Yonex as the Official Equipment Partner, will feature the world’s best para badminton players, including Jack Shephard from Chesterfield, who will be competing for qualification points for the Paris Paralympic Games in 2024.

With just two weeks to go, tickets are still available for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Para Badminton tournament [in partnership with Badminton England, UK Sport, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield City Trust].

Taking place from 2 – 6 August, the 4 Nations Para Badminton International is a collaborative international Para badminton tournament created in partnership between the badminton federations of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The event has been created to bring together the four nations on several key initiatives with the intention of sharing resources, learning and expertise that will enable more people to play badminton, including those with disabilities.

The event will also help to train and develop better coaches, enable better training and deployment of technical officials, increase competition opportunities for Badminton England members and local players, and develop stronger governance standards.

Sue Storey, Badminton England Chief Executive, said: “We are incredibly excited to be delivering such an amazing para badminton event in Sheffield which we hope will inspire more people to play badminton, including those with disabilities.

“We look forward to welcoming new and existing fans to the EIS to experience the unbelievable talent and ability of the world’s best players.

“As part of our ambition to introduce badminton to more players in Sheffield, we also hope to see many adults and children in the Millennium Square giving badminton a go – they will not be disappointed!”

Badminton England will use the event to inspire a new generation of badminton players across England, with a particular focus on Sheffield and the surrounding areas.

Ahead of the tournament, Badminton England will deliver a ‘have a go’ opportunity in Sheffield’s Millennium square for city residents on 29 July. The Badminton England team will be on site to coach, educate and sign-post people to local badminton clubs within the city and its surroundings. This will coincide with the city’s ‘Sheffield by the seaside’ event that will take place next door within the Peace Gardens.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee, said: “Sheffield is delighted to welcome 4 Nations Para Badminton International to the city. It is a fantastic opportunity for residents to discover a new sport and get involved with para badminton, a sport which is already based in Sheffield at EIS.

“To warm up for the big tournament residents can have a go at badminton in the heart of the city centre a week before the matches begin. With expert guidance from Team England Badminton players themselves, this is a brilliant opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to get involved with the sport.

“Sheffield has played host to some fantastic sporting events over the years and each one leaves a legacy that boosts the popularity of the sport and inspires the next generation of players. I look forward to welcoming Badminton England to the city and encourage residents to go and watch a match if they can and have a go themselves in the city centre. We may discover the next big para badminton star here in Sheffield!”

Tickets are on sale now for adults priced at just £5.00, with children who are accompanied by an adult able to attend free.
