Winning three gold medals at any world sporting event is no mean feat. Add into that equation having had a major organ transplant before your third birthday and you have a very special young man.
Born with a rare liver disease, Kristof Polgar had to undergo liver transplantation at just two-years-old. Thanks to his amazing donor family and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, he was given the gift of life.
The young toddler was not even able to walk until after his transplant – making his sporting success even more remarkable.
He took up sport just a few months after his transplant and he now trains very hard in all three racket sports: badminton, tennis and table tennis.
Plethora
At just 11-years-old, Kristof was chosen to represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games, held in Newcastle and Gateshead.
The 13-times British champion was able to add to his plethora of medals, standing atop the podium in each of the three events at world level.
Kristof, who enjoys his badminton training with his sister, Fanni at Ashton Badminton Club, Kingswinford, said: “It was amazing to be a member of Team GB and winning three gold medals at my first World Games is a dream come true.
“I worked really hard and hope that I made everyone proud. Thanks to everyone who supported me.”
Kristof’s mother, Erika, added: “We are incredibly proud of him – that he works very hard in everything he does, and it is amazing to see him becoming an inspirational young athlete.
“It is a privilege to support him on his journey.”
