Birmingham 2022 Team Leader announcement

Badminton England can today announce that Jon Austin has been named as the Team England Team Leader for badminton at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Twenty years after the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games and ten years after London 2012, elite athletes from across the Commonwealth will return to compete on home turf in Birmingham.

Jon, Performance Director at Badminton England, has been involved with badminton for 40 years as a player, coach and volunteer.

He started his professional life as a physical training instructor in the Royal Air Force before taking on a number of roles within sport and leisure. These included being a performance advisor at UK Sport, CEO of Pentathlon GB and combining his current role with that of Olympic Team Leader for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021 cycles.

Jon said: “I feel extremely privileged and excited to once again take on the role of Team Leader for Birmingham.

“I will give my all to support both badminton and Team England to a successful Games.”

From the 28 July to 8 August 2022, our sport will join 18 others on the programme, with 6,500 athletes and officials set to participate.

Jon is also the chair of the newly established Birmingham 2022 Team England Team Leader Advisory Group. He joins five other Team Leaders who will represent all Commonwealth sports in discussions with Commonwealth Games England.

The group has been set up to ensure that the Team Leaders’ views and thoughts are shared on key areas and that Team England operations are delivered in a collaborative and effective manner.
