Cholan Kayan succumbed to third round defeat after a disappointing week for the English contingent at the YONEX German Junior in Berlin.

The 17-year-old went down to a 21-18 21-15 loss against Japan’s Haruta Uchino, battling hard but having his run at the tournament cut short after promising performances against Teodor Ioan Cioroboiu and Michael Tomic in the opening two rounds.

And Kayan also suffered a first round defeat in the men’s doubles alongside partner Jack Taylor, losing 21-9 21-10 against Indonesian pair Muhammad Rayhan Nur Fadillah Rahmat Hidayat on Thursday.

Taylor also lost his first round match in the men’s singles, suffering a two-game defeat against M Fazriq Mohamad Razif to dash his hopes of progression.

And in the women’s singles, Ashwati Nair also crashed out at the first hurdle as she rallied admirably but lost 21-16 21-18 against Czech Reublic’s Soňa Hořínkova.
