Superstars 2011

Badminton England’s Superstars of 2011 began their September with a bang at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games, which came to Sheffield this year.

The Superstars once again endured three hard days of officiating, but for the ones who attended Gateshead in 2010, the days were not quite as long!

The athletes and officials experience a daredevil opening ceremony which was held at the Motorpoint Arena which included free running, BMX tricks, acrobatics and fireworks all under one roof. The games were officially opened by Paralympic gold medallist, Ellie Simmons MBE.

The officiating began Friday morning, with the intensity of the matches far greater than some of the Superstars had ever experienced before it was a great eye opener to them, but all of the Superstars excelled themselves even going back for more on the Saturday and Sunday!

The badminton was held at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport, which also housed volleyball and fencing so the Superstars also got to watch and experience other sports during the weekend. Aside from officiating when not on court the Superstars took every opportunity they could to play a little badminton themselves!
