Grading Information:

Players are graded on their singles record only. The purpose of the grading structure is to provide players with a guide as to the appropriate level of play for their ability enabling them, together with their coaches and parents, to plan a structured Tournament Programme. A player of any ability may enter a Gold Event, Grade 2 and below may enter Silver Events and Grade 3 and un-graded players Bronze events.

Grade 1
  • S&Y Board Grading Committee will select players for this grade using the grading lists from the 2009/10 season and end of season results.
  • Our aim is to have at least 24 players in this grade (both sexes), at the start of the season.
  • Notification of players selected for this grade will be posted on the website by the end of July.
  • Grade 1 players entering a Gold Event in their own age group will given priority over all other grades in BE Gold events (valid entry permitting).
  • Grade 1 players may enter a Silver Event in the age group above providing that they have not qualified as a Grade 1 player in this age group as well.
Grade 2
  • S&Y Board Grading Committee will select players for this grade using the grading lists, the end of season rankings and the results of the 2009/10 season.
  • Our aim is to have at least 32 players in this grade (both sexes), at the start of the season.
  • Notification of players selected for this grade will be posted on the website in July.
  • Players in this grade can enter any BE Gold or Silver tournament in their own age group.
  • Grade 2 players entering a Silver Event in their own age group will given priority over all other grades in BE Silver events (valid entry permitting).
  • Grade 2 players may enter a Bronze Event in the age group above providing that they have not qualified as a Grade 2 player in this age group as well.
  • If at the closing date a Grade 1 player is entered for a Silver event in their own age group their entry will be rejected.
Grade 3
  • S&Y Board Grading Committee will select players for this grade using the grading lists, the end of season rankings and the results of the 2009/10 season.
  • The number of players in this grade will vary significantly between sexes and age groups.
  • Notification of players selected for this grade will be posted on the website in July.
  • Grade 3 players entering a Bronze Event in their own age group will given priority over ungraded players in BE Gold events (valid entry permitting).
  • Players in this grade may enter any circuit tournament.
  • If at the closing date a Grade 1 or 2 player is entered for a Bronze event in their own age group their entry will be rejected.

The grade of a player is adjusted down a grade when playing up an age group i.e. a Grade 1 will become a Grade 2 player.

NB: Any player not listed as Grade 1, 2 or 3 is advised to play in a Bronze event in order to establish a grade.

Upgrading: The upgrading process can be found on the website and on event programmes. Players will only be upgraded on the following dates throughout the season: October 27th 2010, December 17th 2010, February 18th 2011 and July 22nd 2011. The lists will be placed on the website by the Wednesday in the week following the above dates. Players may appeal against their grading within 14 days of the upgrade date, by writing to: Anna Gilbert, Competition and Events Co-ordinator, BADMINTON England, National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes, MK8 9LA.

How the Grading Lists were compiled.

They have been compiled by the Schools and Youth Board using the following criteria:

  • Players who were a year young last year (e.g. Under 14 in the Under 15 Age Group last year) retained the grade they achieved at the end of the 2009/10 season.
  • The grade players had achieved in 2009/10 season was reduced by one if the player changed age groups (e.g. Under 15 grade 2 becomes an Under 17 grade 3). However if the player had, in the 2009/10 season, obtained a higher grade in the age group above they retain this grade.
  • 2010 National and Even age group tournaments results were then scrutinised to adjust grading lists.
  • Please note there are no grading lists for Under 11's. However, Under 11 players can earn a grading at the Under 13 age group if they meet any of the automatic upgrade criteria in an Under 13 Circuit tournament.

Our close liaison with the Home Countries continues and this year we have incorporated four Gold events, one in Cwmbran and three to be held in Northern Ireland, into our programme. We are also working closely with BADMINTON Scotland in an effort to encourage and publicise greater cross border activity.

NB. Under 17 Gold Tournaments will be used as qualifying events for the UK School Games in 2011. Please see the UK School Games section of the website for more information. One of our future targets is to introduce a UK Junior Ranking List.

What to do if you think you have been incorrectly graded.

You must appeal in writing within 14 days of the upgrade date (21 days for the start of season lists).  Phone-calls will not be considered.  Send your appeal to:

Competition and Events Co-ordinator (Juniors), BADMINTON England, National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK8 9LA (Email: Annagilbert@badmintonengland.co.uk)

Appeals will only be upheld in exceptional circumstances or where a clear error has been made. Any letter/e-mail should state the reason for the appeal and will not be considered unless you provide substantial evidence in the form of singles results obtained in BADMINTON England sanctioned events only since February 23rd 2010. The final decision will be with the S&Y Board Grading Committee. Players may appeal to be either upgraded or downgraded.
