An interesting item in the memorabilia collection of the National Badminton Museum at Milton Keynes is a gavel and block carved in wood in the shape of two solid shuttlecocks, the one mounted on the handle, being struck on a second mounted on a base. The handle and shuttlecock are about 16 inches in length, the shuttlecock being about 5 inches high. The shuttlecock mounted on a base or block of about 3 inches is about 5 inches in height. Both shuttlecocks have the feathers shaped in wood, and on the hammer shuttlecock is etched I.B F 1992. Also etched on the base – wintem, Bali.
The item was donated by Arthur Jones CBE, who was President of the Badminton Association of England 1986 to 1990, and President of the International Badminton Federation from 1990 to 1993. He was President when badminton made its debut in the Olympic Games and did much to build the federation’s administration.
