Our picture is a photograph showing British settlers in India playing badminton. It was obtained from e-bay, and the seller advised that he obtained a collection of photos taken by an ex-pat who was based near Shillong Nowgong Station Group. We think the legend reads Nowgong Station Group..............four and settlers ....in front of your big house in the garden Jny 87.
We know that forms of early badminton were being played in India and England from 1867 on, and that the game had reached New York by 1878, South Africa by 1882, and Canada by 1890. Matches and tournaments were being organised and the necessity of standardising a set of rules lead to the founding of the Badminton Association in Southsea, England in 1893.
