Baxter nets England's first Euro win then joy for Cann

Carl Baxter claimed England's first win of the day at the European Championships in Karlskrona, Sweden, this morning with a 21-17 21-6 victory over Italy's Giovanni Greco.

But the big win of the day came from Elizabeth Cann in the women's singles as her Olympic rival Susan Egelstaff made a first-round exit.

Baxter took just 26 minutes to book a second-round clash with Valeriy Atrashchenkov of Ukraine tomorrow.

Sixth seed Rajiv Ouseph took only two minutes longer to get his challenge off to a winning start when he knocked out Spain's Ernesto Velazquez
21-10 21-13.

Ouseph, who was one of England's three bronze medallists in the 2010 championships in Manchester, now meets Ukraine's Dmytro Zavadsky.

But England's third men's singles challenger Toby Penty was even quicker, taking just 22 minutes to defeat Josip Uglesic of Croatia 21-13 21-17 despite having trailed 13-9 in the second game. The left-handed teenager now faces Finland's Eetu Heino tomorrow.

The crucial win of day two came from Cann. The five-times English National champion came from a game down to defeat Sweden's Jenny Wan
16-21 21-13 21-17 after trailing 7-3 in the decider.

She now faces Slovenia's Maja Tvrdy boosted by a shock defeat for Scottish rival Egelstaff, who went down 23-21 21-14 to Czech player Kristina Gavnholt.

England's other singles hope Sarah Walker contested a close-fought three game contest before losing to Norway's Karoliine Holm 21-19 10-21 21-16.

Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver, the sixth seeds and Manchester bronze medallists, produced England's first doubles win when they defeated Russia's Alina Artamonova and Ekanerina Bolotova 21-6 21-16.

They were soon joined in the second round by Alex Langley and Lauren Smith, who defeated Steffi Annys and Severine Corvilain of Belgium 21-16
21-11 but there was a shock defeat for eighth seeds Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White, who went down to Dutch pair Selena Piek and Iris Tabeling
24-22 21-12.

Sixth seeds Chris Adcock and Andy Ellis started their men's doubles bid with any easy 21-7 21-6 win over Arsic Nikola and Vladimir Savich of Serbia and now face Vitaly Konov and Dmytro Zavadsky of Ukraine.

Fourth seeds Adcock and Imogen Bankier and sixth seeds Nathan Robertson and Wallwork tackle the mixed doubles tomorrow.
