Robertson and Wallwork head for Victor Super Series finals in Taiwan
NATHAN ROBERTSON and Jenny Wallwork are England’s only representatives at the Victor Super Series finals in Taiwan, starting tomorrow.
The English national champions, Commonwealth silver and European bronze medallists join the other seven top pairs in the Super Series rankings as they look to make a big start to World Championships year.
January is a big month for the England pair, who tackle the Malaysia and Korea Opens after the Super Series finals before returning home to defend their English National title at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester from February 4-6.
But Robertson, the only current England player to have won a world title - he won the mixed doubles crown with Gail Emms in Madrid in 2006 - will also be looking to peak at the Yonex BWF World Championships at Wembley Arena from August 8-14.
Robertson and Wallwork earned their place in the Taiwan line-up by especially good performances at the Denmark Open, where they reached the final before losing to Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl 21-12 12-21 21-9.
They also hit form at the French Open where they reached the quarter-finals before losing narrowly to Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam 22-20 17-21 21-19. The Thai pair went on to win the title.
In today's draw they landed in Group A with Laybourn and Juhl but avoided Prapakamol and Thoungthongkam, who head Group B.
The mixed doubles final line-up is:
(1) Thomas Laybourn & Kamilla Juhl (Denmark)
(3/4) Zhang Nan & Zhao Yunlei (China)
Songphon Anugritayawan & Kunchala Voravichitchaikul (Thailand)
Nathan Robertson & Jenny Wallwork (England)
(2) Sudket Prapakamol & Saralee Thoungthongkam (Thailand)
(3/4) Robert Matuesiak & Nadiezda Zieba (Poland)
Ko Sung Hyun & Han Jung Eun (Korea)
Hendra Aprida Gunawan & Vita Marissa (Indonesia)
The eight pairs are chasing the $42,000 top prize with the runners-up sharing $20,000.
The top two pairs in each group go through to the knockout semi-finals on Saturday.
