Ouseph tops bill at Head Sussex National Elite Open

RAJIV OUSEPH, the two-time English National men's singles champion, will bid for a second Elite title of the season when he tackes the Head Sussex National Elite Open at Olympos in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, this weekend.

Ouseph, the won the Head Elite title, is the top seed but faces an intriguing opener when he takes on new European junior silver medallist Jamie Van Hooijdonk (Wales) in the opening round.

The other dangers to Ouseph's title bid are second seed Lim Kenn, who won the Head Wimbledon Elite, and Scotland's Kieran Merrilees, who gave Ouseph a good test in the European Team Championship clash with Scotland in Liverpool in February.

In the women's singles Jersey's English National champion Elizabeth Cann was hoping for a first Head Elite title of the season but the top seed has been forced out following a minor car accident.

Helen Davies, England's newest international player at senior level, has the task of stopping second seed Anita Raj Kaur adding the Sussex title to her Wimbeldon win. But Essex player Atu Rosalina Sagita is joint third seed with Davies and already has the Yorkshire title to her name.

A surprise entry in the women's singles is doubles star Gabby White (Yorks). She won both her doubles events at the Wimbledon Elite but is sharpening her game this weekend by playing singles.

In the doubles Andrew Ellis is the only player who can make it a hat-trick of titles after winning in his native Yorkshire men's doubles with Richard Eidestedt and then lifting the Wimbledon title with Dean George. Ellis and Eidestedt are top seeds at Olympos.

Withdrawals in the mixed doubles mean that Ouseph will now partner Samantha Ward but the danger could come from Scotland internationals Merrilees and Bankier. A Scottish pair could challenge for the women's doubles with Linda Sloan and Emma Mason the joint third seeds.
