Archer back and doubling up

SIMON ARCHER has recovered from the knee surgery which kept him out of the Sudirman Cup world team championships in Beijing last month and returns to action in the Aviva Singapore Open (June 27-July 3) and the Proton Malaysia Open (July 5-10).

He will team up with Anthony Clark in the men’s doubles and will resume playing mixed doubles in a new pairing with Olympic squad member Jo Wright.

Archer is the only member of the squad not qualified for the world championships in Anaheim, California, in mid-August.

The other 13 squad members will be using the tour to sharpen their game after a well-earned post-Beijing break from tournament action.

Andrew Smith and Tracey Hallam will play singles while England No 1 Hallam will also partner Natalie Munt in doubles to sharpen her game.

Coaches John Quinn, who missed the Sudirman Cup through illness, and Andy Wood will take charge of the squad.

Olympic silver medallists Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms will head for Manila after the Malaysia Open to represent the European Badminton Union in a new three-day, Ryder Cup-style match against Asia. Robertson will play mixed with his European gold medal partner Emms and men’s doubles with Robert Blair.
