Clark and Robertson stun third seeds in Singapore
FORMER European silver medallists Anthony Clark and Nathan Robertson made up for their mixed doubles disappointments today by pulling off a stunning men's doubles victory on day two of the Avivia Singapore Open.
The England pair came back from a game down to beat Malaysia's third seeds Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong 13-21 21-19 21-14 in the second round.
Clark and Robertson hit back after losing the opener to lead 18-14 then held their nerve when the Malaysians levelled at 19-19 before taking the second game to level the match. In the third game they trailed earlier on before surging to 14-8 and going on to win in 51 minutes.
England's last men standing face China's Guo Zhendong and Xu Chen in tomorrow's quarter-finals.
Earlier in the day European champions Clark and Donna Kellogg were beaten by old rivals Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir in the mixed doubles second round.
Clark and Kellogg fell 21-18 21-11 in 29 minutes against the Indonesian top seeds and double world champions.
Robertson and Jenny Wallwork also bowed out, losing to Danish third seeds Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl 21-10 21-18 in 31 minutes.
England's two-time National champion Rajiv Ouseph also fell in second-round action. But the world No 30 can be pleased with his display as he pushed China's fourth seed all the way before losing 21-19 21-16.
Ouseph was always in the hunt in the first game and levelled the contest at 19-19 before Chen sneaked the next two points. In the second game the 22-year-old Middlesex man led 8-6 but once Chen pulled level at 8-8, he then applied the pressure gradually to ease away.
Even so, Ouseph kept him on court for 37 minutes and can only benefit from playing opponents of this calibre on a regular basis.
Kellogg and Scotland's Imogen Bankier were in women's doubles action in the evening session but went down 21-15 24-22.against Japan's Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa despite holding a game point at 22-21 in the second game.
