Adcocks exit Yonex German Open but happy with 'tough loss'

Chris and Gabby Adcock, playing their first tournament of the year together since their superb Superseries Finals' win, were beaten in a second-round thriller against in-form Thai pair Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Sapsiree Taerattanachai as the Yonex German Open saw England players fall short of quarter-final places in Mulheim an der Ruhr.

The Asian duo had already proved themselves on tour this year already with two events under their belts. As qualifiers, they reached the final of the Syed Modi International and last eight of the Thailand Masters.

And they came through a tough 55-minute examination against the English number one's 12-21, 21-15, 26-24 after the second-seeded Adcocks held a 15-11 lead in the decider.

Chris admitted that they lacked match sharpness after a long training block back at Milton Keynes, while Gabby said of yesterday's defeat: "It was a tough loss but we felt it was a pretty good match but we let them in too easy in the second. But we're glad we could get a decent match in before next week."

The pair will now have a few days' rest and training ahead of their "favourite" tournament, next week's YONEX All England Championships.

Meanwhile, Toby Penty reached the second round of the men's singles draw where he met China's fifth seed Tian Houwei before putting up a spirited fight in losing out 21-18, 21-14.

National champions Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge's opening match in the men's doubles was always going to be an evenly-matched contest.

And so it proved as they were just edged out 21-16, 19-21, 21-17 by Indian rivals Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy.

Peter Briggs and Tom Wolfenden were also beaten by Chinese opponents in the  first round.

Heather Olver and Lauren Smith exited at the second round stage of the women's doubles as Japan's second seeds Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi won through 21-12, 21-15.
