My day in badminton: Rajiv Ouseph

Rajiv Ouseph, England’s number one, has set a target to be inside the men's singles top 16 of Rio qualification, which ends in May.

With just over two months left, Ouseph is focusing on another tilt at the YONEX All England Championships, the sport’s oldest event, which will start in 10 days time at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena.

Ouseph, who reached the quarter-finals last year during a brilliant run, said: “The depth is now unbelievable in men's singles. When you are in the All England draw you have to be confident in winning matches. Against anyone it's about what happens on that particular day.”

As he gears up for his home event - full draw can be found here - he runs through his daily routine at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.

MORNING

Usually we're on at 8:30am so I'm up any time from 6:30 in the morning. Breakfast is usually some bran flakes, fruit, or toast and yogurt. Eggs will give me more energy if it's going to be an intense session.

I get to the National Centre before 8am and everyone has their own personalised warm-ups that the physio has given them.

It's catered towards any niggles you've had in the past or strengthening that you need to do. For me, that's quite a long list! So I will start on achilles and calf rehab to get them warm: a few calf raises and some jumps geared towards more intense training.

Monday and Wednesday there will be 45-minute, short and sharp work outs. There might be 800 shuttles with two of us on court; 15 shuttles each with a rest to replicate the intensity of a game. Maximum effort is put in here.

LUNCH

I'll go back home as I live only five minutes away from the Centre. Lunch might consist of some scrambled eggs with ham and a slice of toast. It's nice to go back to your own place and relax. And there may be the odd computer game if there's time or if my fiancée lets me.

AFTERNOON

Monday, Wednesday and Friday we do weight training as well as off-court routines which will take up to two hours.

Other days, we might do 20 to 40-minutes on the bike varying in intensity, perhaps working hard with one minute off and repeating the process eight to 10 times.

Occasionally I might raise the morale with some soccer tricks, when the coaches aren't in.
