Andrew Smith, the only England player competing in the Thailand Open in Bangkok this week, beat Japan's Shoji Sato 21-14 21-15 in his opening match.

But the joint ninth seed came unstuck in the second round when he lost to Chun Seang Tan 15-21 21-17 21-18 of Malaysia.

Smith, from Hampshire, now moves on to New Zealand for his next tournament as he closes in on a place in the world's top 20 in the men's singles rankings. He remains at No 22 in today's list.
