England call up teenager Parsons for Thomas Cup
Sam Parsons is set to make his senior England debut after being named in the squad for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals - the prestigious world team championships being held in Delhi in mid-May.
The 18-year-old from Coventry is the only uncapped player in the men’s and women’s teams named today and he joins another newcomer in Nuneaton’s Rhys Walker, who only made his international debut at the European Team Championships in February.
Parsons, the nephew of former England international Steve Butler, earned his call-up after retaining his English Under 19 National title and reaching the final of senior championships before losing to Rajiv Ouseph, the senior squad member and team captain.
Ouseph, who won the silver medal at last week’s European Championships to go with his silver from the European Men’s Team event in February, is the most experienced player in the two squads with 51 appearances. Gabby Adcock is the most experienced member of the women’s Uber Cup team with 28 caps.
England’s men take on Japan, Denmark and Hong Kong in the Thomas Cup group stages while the Uber Cup squad face holders China, Taipei and Russia.
England’s head coach Jakob Hoi said: “The two squads will face some tough challenges in Delhi but the selectors have found a good balance between youth and experience as we build for the future.
“Players like Sam and Rhys will learn a lot from being in a team environment alongside established players like Rajiv, Chris Adcock, Chris Langridge and Andy Ellis.
“In the women’s squad Gabby Adcock, Sarah Walker and Heather Olver can pass on their experience to the younger ones although most of the players selected are experienced tournament competitors.”
Coventry have produced a second player in the squads with Fontaine Chapman one of four women’s singles players selected.
The two Championships run in tandem from May 18-25.
