Lane & Pugh net 6 Nations silver for Team England in Holland
Center Parcs – supported Team England young guns Ben Lane and Jess Pugh netted a solid silver medal at the U17 6 Nations badminton tournament in Holland over the weekend despite playing up an age group.
Lane, from Devon and Shropshire starlet Pugh headed to Arnhem in a rich vein of form having beat a number of big seeds to reach final of the mixed doubles of the U19 English National Championships and once again showed their genuine promise as a pairing to watch as they took on some of the best young talent from Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France and hosts Holland.
The young English pair defied the seedings, defeating French and Dutch rivals in the early rounds of action before enjoying a stunning 21-12, 16-21, 21-17 victory over Frederik Sogaard Mortensen and Julie O Jensen, the top seeds from Denmark, to reach the final.
With a gold within their grasp, Lane and Pugh narrowly missed out on the coveted title going down 16-21, 14-21 to the 3rd seeded German pair of Max Weisskirchen and Eva Janssens.
Elsewhere, in an event which saw all-Danish finals in all but the Mixed Doubles discipline, there were notable Quarter Final finishes for two of Center Parcs – supported Team England’s Mens Doubles duos as Ben Lane teamed up with Sean Vendy and Matthew Clare partnered James Farmer to a last 8 finish.
Lynlette Aung also reached the Quarter Finals of the Womens Singles event before falling to eventual champion, and top seed, Mia Blichfeldt.
