England hopes end in semi-finals in Bulgaria

Young England doubles prospects Chris Coles and Matthew Nottingham lost in the semi-finals at the Babolat Bulgarian International in Sofia today.

The third seeds won their morning quarter-final against Welsh pair Daniel Font and Oliver Gwilt in comfortable fashion 21-11 21-14.

But in the semi-finals they went down 21-15 21-12 to Scotland's former England international Robert Blair and Malaysian partner Tan Bin Shen. The fifth seeds will face Germany's fourth seeds Andreas Heinz and Max Schwenger in tomorrow's final.

Coles was also bidding for success in the mixed doubles with Jessica Fletcher. The third seeds defeated Bulgaria's Stefan Garev and Gabriela Stoeva 21-16
21-18 in the quarter-finals.

But in the semi-finals they were knocked out by Peter Kasbauer and Isabel Herttrich 21-15 21-15. In the final the unseeded Gemans will meet top seeds and team-mates Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels.

Fuchs and Michels beat fourth seeds Blair and Jillie Cooper 17-21 22-20 21-10 in the semi-finals after the Scots had looked on course for a straight games win at 19-16 in the second game.

The European focus now switches to next week's Yonex Dutch Open in Almere.
