13.03.12

Wallwork and White edged out in Basel

Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White saved three match points in their qualifying final at today’s Swiss Open in Basel but still could not snatch a place in the main draw.

The three-times English National champions could not overcome Malaysian top qualifying seeds Iris and Rena Wang. Wallwork and White went down 21-10 13-21 24-22 after 62 minutes.

Earlier in the day they had won a tight first-round duel with Claudia Vogelgsang and Kerstin Wagner 21-15 21-19.

With Wallwork and White missing out, it leaves Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver as the lone GB hopes in the main draw. They face eighth seeds Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii of Indonesia tomorrow.

Wallwork is back in action tomorrow when she and Nathan Robertson face Bulgaria’s Stilian Makarski and Diana Dimova in the mixed doubles first round.

If they win their opener they are likely to face Olympic rivals Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier in the second round. The Anglo-Scottish pair got a boost today when their first-round opponent,  Yonex All England runners-up Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl, pulled out.

Adcock and Bankier now face France’s Baptiste Careme and Audrey Fontaine tomorrow morning with the GB pairs on course to meet at 4.55pm on Thursday.

Adcock is also in men’s doubles action against Christian John Skovgaard and Mads Pieler Kolding of Denmark.
