Baxter earns a crack at Lin Dan in Germany
England's Carl Baxter made a solid start to his Yonex German Open campaign in Mulheim today.
The England No. 2 was too strong for Russia's Ivan Sozonov, winning 21-16 21-16.
He now faces Lin Dan in tomorrow afternoon's second round after the reigning world champion and top seed from China defeated Swedish qualifier Matthias Borg 21-15 21-11. It will be the first time Baxter has faced the four-times Yonex All England champion, who will be bidding to regain his title in Birmingham's National Indoor Arena next week.
Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White were the only other England players in action on day one in Mulheim. The pair were second seeds in the women's doubles qualifying and came through their opening contest against Spain's Jolly Lee and France's Shinta Saiche 21-11 21-13.
But they fell in the second round 21-9 21-11 against Korea's Kim So Young and Choi Hye In.
Wallwork is back in action tomorrow lunchtime when she and Nathan Robertson take on second seeds Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand in the mixed doubles first round.
Chris Adcock and Scotland's Imogen Bankier face an evening clash with Chayut Triyachart and Yao Lei of Singapore.
Adcock also tackles the men's doubles with Andy Ellis and they start against Wei Hong and Ye Shen of China.
