Team England go down fighting

Team England produced a battling display in their opening Group D match at the 2011 Double Star BWF Sudirman Cup in Qingdao tonight but it wasn't enough to stop Denmark scoring a 5-0 win.

Commonwealth silver medallists and world No 13s Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork took the opening game of the mixed doubles before world No 3 pair Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen hit back to take the next two 21-15 21-10.

Rajiv Ouseph then pushed former world No. 1 Peter Gade all the way before losing 21-17 21-17.

Gade set the pace in the opener but Ouseph, the world No 16,  pegged back the world No. 5 to 17-17 in the second game before losing the next four points and with it the 40-minute contest.

And the second-seeded Danes grabbed a 3-0 winning lead when world No 22 pair Andrew Ellis and Chris Adcock went down against world No 18 Jonas Rasmussen and Mads Conrad-Pedersen 16-21 21-15 23-21 in a terrific 68-minute battle.

The England pair held two match points in the decider before the Danes snatched the contest on their second match point.

World No 8 Tine Baun proved too strong for Elizabeth Cann in the women’s singles, winning 21-14 21-18 although Cann pushed her all the way in the second game. They were level pegging at 13-13 in the second before Baun edged clear to win in 29 minutes.

That left world No 28s Wallwork and Gabby White to take on world No 29s Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Pedersen in the final women’s doubles and the Danish pair came through 21-16 21-13 in 32 minutes.

Team England, who are supported by Center Parcs, must now lift their spirits as they take on Korea tomorrow in a match they must win to stay in the tournament.
